Ulrich-Schiewer-Laboratory for Experimental Aquatic Ecology (USELab)

The Ulrich-Schiewer-Laboratory for Experimental Aquatic Ecology (USELab) bases upon a long tradition of German-Russian cooperation in aquatic ecology. Since 1998, several short-term cooperation projects on Baltic Sea plankton ecology were initiated by Professor Schiewer (University of Rostock) and realized by German and Russian partners. In May 2010, the USELab (at that time USLEAE) was created and funded by IB/BMBF for a period of 18 months (pilot phase). The USELab project was initiated by Prof. Hendrik Schubert (University of Rostock), Dr. Irena Telesh (Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg) and Dr. Sergei Skarlato (Institute of Cytology, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg).

To continue the successful cooperation, the consolidation phase of the project started in January 2013 focusing on (A) applying expert knowledge of cooperating partners for education and qualification of young scientists in the field of brackish water ecology and plankton taxonomy, and (B) research of brackish water biodiversity, ecology and dynamics of plankton communities.

There are three main tasks for the consolidation phase of the project:
